Spring Creek Growers is a Third-Generation Montgomery County Farm.

Originally a vegetable producing farm, Spring Creek Growers Choose and Cut Christmas Tree farm is now harvesting Texas-grown Virginia Pine trees. Located in the Southwest corner of Montgomery county, the farm boasts approximately 10 acres of Christmas trees.   Owners Carla Michel Jones & Bob Jones have operated the farm since 1992.  Carla's grandparents, Fritz and Elizabeth Michel purchased the farm in 1921, and together with their son Maurice grew produce to sell in the Houston produce market.  "Our grandmother always had a terrific vegetable garden.  She would even stay up late at night to stand guard over her garden so the raccoons wouldn't make a raid on the watermelons," says Carla.

"We think our grandparents would really enjoy the Christmas Tree Farm.  The farm is really pretty quiet all year until the day after Thanksgiving when we open.  On a busy day they see over 100 families at the farm.  We see families returning year after year, establishing a family tradition by coming to our farm for their Christmas tree.  It's nice that we're able to share the beauty of the farm with our customers," says Carla.  Customers are greeted in front of the barn area and are given a saw, measuring pTreeole and tree tag.  Since trees are priced by the foot, the measuring pole helps to guide customers as to size as well as price.   They encourage customers to make sure they place the tag, with their name and a number on it, on the tree and then cut it down with the handsaw which is provided.

Once the tree is cut, it is loaded onto a trailer and customers and their tree ride the hayride back to the barn area where the tree is put in a shaking machine to dislodge old-growth needles and dust.  Then it is netted for ease of loading and transporting. One of the trailers is pulled by their grandfather's antique cherry-red Farmall Super A tractor.  Carla remembers seeing her grandfather and her dad farming with it.

Customers are also treated with their choice of coffee or hot chocolate, free of charge. Handmade crafts and fresh wreaths, as well as the cashier, are located in the old farmhouse. "We try to provide our customers with a true experience of being in the country at a turn-of-the-century farmstead," says Jones.

The entiTreere family helps out during the selling season. "We like being right where the action is. We've had some great experiences since we've been selling trees.  One of our favorite memories is of a couple who arrived at our farm and announced that they had had such a bad year that they were going to finish out the year by choosing the ugliest tree that we had. Of course we promptly told them that we didn't have any ugly trees at our farm but they were welcome to search for one," states Jones.

Bob & Carla have expanded the farm to include a full-scale nursery operation. Carla's husband Bob is a horticulturist with 20 years of experience in the nursery industry. According to Jones, "We want to offer the same freshness concept as we do with our Christmas trees with annual and perennial color.  We hope that our customers will enjoy the same country experience in the spring and fall.  We plan to offer field-grown flowers as well as containerized annuals, perennials and herbs.  We're all very excited about the farm being more of a year-round experience for our customers."
